Melissa MacGregor is regularly hired by law firms to investigate potential criminal activity. She has conducted extensive online searches on sex offenders, drug traffickers, white supremacy groups and reported them to the U.S. Marshals, all from her desk where she writes dark, twisted tales. Her debut book The Curious Steambox Affair is available from Penguin/Random House.

In 2015, Melissa was selected by SMU libraries as one of that year's Top Ten Haute Young Authors. She currently resides outside Dallas, accompanied by a herd of pygmy goats and a very naughty English Mastiff named Agatha Christie.
